BANG! BANG! is a student short I shot on Super 8mm film for Columbia University’s Graduate film program. Matteo Fantaci originally conceived the script as the introductory sequence for a feature project of the same name. We worked side-by-side to adapt the script into a tense study of a lonely boy, isolated by the neglect of his prostitute mother, with only his toy six-guns and Cowboy fantasies to provide an escape. We focused the camerawork on keeping the audience in the boy’s experience and used sparse lighting, minimal camera movement, and darkly textured environments to portray his emotional desolation at a very crucial turning point in his life. Our first time working in a silent Super-8 format, we were driven to keep the shot list to a minimum, enhancing the meaning contained in each. After shooting, I handled post production and color correction while we collaboratively edited the footage and recorded a rich sound track that draws the audience into this little boy’s world. After the edit was complete I art directed, designed and animated a title sequence that carries the themes of the story to completion.
